Michelle Underhill, COSLA Representative

State Library of North Carolina, Raleigh, NC

Professional Background

I have served as the State Librarian of North Carolina since June 2022. I have over 20 years of experience in libraries, five of those in public Headshot of Michelle Underhill.libraries and 15+ in special collections, digital librarianship, and government libraries. I also served as Executive Director for a small non-profit spanning several states for two years.

I earned my Master of Library and Information Science at UNC-Greensboro. For my work with NCpedia, I received the 2011 Gale Cengage Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Services.

I have led digitization initiatives, grown NCpedia (an online encyclopedia of North Carolina history, people, and culture, located at ncpedia.org), facilitated collaborations with partners such as UNC Press and Our State Magazine, and spearheaded the effort to extend borrowing privileges to all North Carolina residents.

What inspired you to get involved with the board?

I have long admired ARSL and its services and support to rural libraries. I'm excited to be an effective conduit between Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA) and ARSL to provide support and resources to small and rural libraries.

Why is the mission of the Association for Rural & Small Libraries important to you?

Supporting libraries is another role state library agencies have, and we share this role. Many states (including NC) have large rural areas.

"I was proud to work with ARSL leadership to collect information on the impact of Hurricane Helene in several states in 2024 to help get needed support to impacted libraries for their recovery."
