Infinite Sums Grant
Grant Program Overview
Through generous funding from the Simons Foundation and in partnership with SciStarter, ARSL is offering a micro-grant program to support rural libraries in hosting community math events as part of the Infinite Sums 2026 Program. An overview of the program will be presented at the 2025 ARSL Conference.
A cohort of 15 library workers will be selected to host community-wide events for patrons of all ages on Pi Day, Infinity Day, and Fibonacci Day in 2026. In addition to regular virtual training sessions, the cohort will attend two in-person gatherings to foster deeper connection and community.
Funding Details
Each of the 15 selected libraries will receive a $10,000 one-time grant. Funds may be used for:
- Programmatic expenses (staff time, supplies, marketing, outreach, refreshments, incentives)
- Space setup or equipment rental
- Administrative costs related to planning and reporting
- Travel to the 2026 ARSL Conference in Montgomery, AL
- Staff coverage during conference travel
Note: Travel for the January 2026 convening in New York will be reimbursed directly by the Simons Foundation.
Program Requirements
- All three onsite programs must be hosted on the following dates:
- Pi Day – 3/14/2026
- Infinity Day – 8/8/2026
- Fibonacci Day – 11/23/2026
- Applicants must be available to attend:
- New York convening – 1/25–1/26/2026
- ARSL Conference in Montgomery, AL – 9/17–9/19/2026
- Virtual cohort sessions begin November 2025 (1 hour per month)
Eligibility
- Open to public libraries located in the United States
- 501(c)(3) status is not required
- ARSL membership is not required
- Libraries must serve small and/or rural communities
- IMLS defines rural as being 10+ miles from a city/town with 25,000+ people
- Small communities are defined as populations of 25,000 or less
- Libraries in systems may apply if their branch serves a qualifying population
Use of Funds
- Allowable expenses include:
- Marketing and outreach
- Staff time
- Books
- Games
- Manipulatives (e.g., blocks, measuring cups, tiles) & supplies
- Non-allowable expenses include:
- Presenter fees
- Capital expenditures
- Technology
Reporting Requirements
- A brief summary report is required at the end of the program
- Report must include event activities and participant headcounts
- A marketing release will be required. ARSL and the Simons Foundation may use summaries in newsletters, social media, or on their websites.
