ARSL Spotlight: Kristi Chadwick

Kristi Chadwick  Director, Ballston Community Public Library, Burnt Hills NY

Kristi Chadwick, Director of the Ballston Community Public Library in Burnt Hills, NY, knows firsthand how small libraries can create a big impact in their communities.

When the Ballston Community Public Library became its own special district in 2023, it marked a significant milestone. "It means we go straight to the residents for both our budget and trustee elections," Kristi explains. "It makes us more accountable and transparent to our community while giving us more flexibility to grow and serve."

Since stepping into the director role just over a year ago, Kristi has embraced leading through change with both curiosity and courage. Her team focuses on programming for all ages and isn't afraid to experiment. "We try different things to see their impact. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but every outcome gives us more insight into what our community needs."

After more than two decades working with libraries in Massachusetts, including ten years as a consultant supporting small libraries statewide, Kristi returned to upstate New York with a clear mission. Now, she's guiding her library through a comprehensive policy review to reflect its new governance structure, supported by an engaged committee and experienced staff.

Kristi's connection to ARSL began at her first conference in 2017, and she's been actively involved ever since, serving on the Policy Committee, Conference Committee, and other initiatives. "The connections I've made through ARSL are invaluable," she says. "Small libraries are incredibly innovative and responsive. Being part of an organization that understands that and actively supports it has been a gift."

Her message to fellow small and rural library professionals is simple but powerful:

"It may feel like you're alone, but you're not. Reach out. There's a whole network of people ready to share, support, and cheer you on."
