Margaret Woodruff — Charlotte Library, Director, Charlotte, VT
Margaret Woodruff, Director of the Charlotte Library in Charlotte, Vermont, has built a vibrant hub rooted in connection, sustainability, and community resilience. "I think I'm most proud of our community connections," Margaret shared. "We work with many partners—both individuals and groups—to create programs, share resources, and build community resilience."
Climate change and sustainability have been one of the library's newer areas of focus, a commitment that is part of its participation in the Sustainable Libraries Initiative. The library's programming has opened up a broader community conversation about local climate footprint and has become an extended conversation about the overall resilience of the town. "We are grateful and thankful that citizens recognize that the library has to be where that conversation continues," she stated.
Within the small town of Charlotte, the library is a many-sided institution. Its strategic plan is based on responsive, inclusive engagement that promotes lifelong learning. From English language support for new Americans to computer support for seniors, the library caters to all. Collections range from classical fairy tales to infrared heat detectors, and programming from book clubs to baking classes.
While it’s hard to pick just one success story, Margaret considers the library’s 2020 expansion to be one of its most significant accomplishments. The renovation doubled the service area, added a children's area, a program room, and expanded adult reading areas. The expanded campus includes an award-winning pollinator garden, a portable Charlie Cart kitchen, and a net-zero energy design.
For Margaret, collaboration has been the most helpful for her work. Peer conversations have helped her respond to local and global challenges with creativity and care. A longtime ARSL member, she reflects fondly on attending her first conference in Raleigh, NC and later participating in the inaugural Leadership cohort.
"Thank you to the ARSL board and the staff for supporting and helping rural and small libraries! Knowing that ARSL is working to keep library doors open and library programs available gives me hope."
