Amber Sweetland — Kimball Public Library, Director, Kimball, NE & 2025 Dr. Bernard Vavrek LIS Scholarship Recipient
Kimball Public Library, located in a small rural town in southwest Nebraska, may seem like a modest institution, but it has a significant impact. Under the direction of Amber Sweetland, the library has introduced a Makerspace, a Library of Things, a Lettuce Grow hydroponic tower, and a rich collection of local history. But Amber is most proud of the library’s welcoming atmosphere and dedicated staff.
“All of our staff volunteer outside of work,” she shares. “It shows how deeply we care about this community. We’re proud to be a place of peace, education, and fun.”
Amber’s path to librarianship began eight years ago when she applied for a part-time job after being a stay-at-home mom. “My people said it was like my mothership was calling me home.” As a teen with dyslexia, she struggled to enjoy reading—until her grandmother, a resilient rancher and writer, tossed her a book and said, “If you’re bored, then read.” That sparked a lifelong love of books and eventually, a career in libraries.
Amber believes in meeting people where they are. “Talk to your patrons. I like to say we’re the non-alcoholic bartenders.” One of Amber’s most meaningful experiences was helping a young patron with a troubled home life find sanctuary at the library. “We bonded over fantasy books. Eventually, his mom submitted a nomination for a librarian award. It’s still on my wall.” The note read:
“Amber is my son’s favorite librarian. He talks about her like a friend.”
She joined ARSL because of the conference, and we’re so proud to have her as part of our community!
