ARSL Spotlight: John Clexton

John Clexton   Library Director, Gladwin County District Library, Gladwin, MI & ARSL Board President

As the current President of the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL), John Clexton brings both heart and humor to the work of library leadership. Based in Gladwin, Michigan, John serves as Library Director at Gladwin County District Library, a vibrant community hub uniquely located in the same building as an ice arena, fitness gym, Taekwondo studio, and aerobics center. The library offers something for everyone—from bread-baking classes and puppet shows to Driver’s Ed and a beloved in-house therapy dog, Izzy.

John achieved his dream of living in the Caribbean, spending a year and a half in St. Croix. While island life was beautiful, he missed the changing seasons—and Michigan football. He returned home and embraced “lake life” in Gladwin, where he found new meaning in community-centered librarianship.

Since taking the helm, John and his team have transformed the library’s role in the community. Program attendance has grown by 200% and circulation by 63%. He credits this evolution to a dedicated staff, creative partnerships, and a shared belief that libraries can be joyful, welcoming spaces. “You can’t get the water to clear up until you get the pigs out of the creek,” he says, quoting The Hardest Ride. “Address internal challenges, and the rest will follow.”

John connected with ARSL early in his current role and quickly found a professional home—one where rural library voices are not only heard but truly valued. From webinars and board collaboration to conferences and conversations, ARSL has supported his growth as both a librarian and a leader.

The world of libraries brings a daily mix of fear, joy, uncertainty, and celebration. In today’s climate, that mix has only intensified, with challenges like book bans, funding threats, and unexpected hurdles. But through it all, John believes the connections made through ARSL are what keep library professionals grounded, supported, and inspired.

“We are here to care for one another. While we may operate individual libraries, being an ARSL member means I am part of something much bigger. We are part of a national family.”
