ARSL Spotlight: Amanda Doherty

Amanda Doherty – Building Community in Central Illinois, One Patron at a Time. As a dedicated ARSL member and small-town advocate, Amanda shares her journey into librarianship, her love for rural life, and a program that’s bringing holiday cheer with a twist.

What is your connection to ARSL? Can you tell us about yourself and your library?
I’m Amanda Doherty—mom to Maggie and Liam, wife to Chris, and a proud Central Illinois resident. Since 2018, I’ve served as Director of the Mt. Pulaski Public Library, where we’re surrounded by cornfields and a strong sense of community.

I joined ARSL in 2020 and was honored to be part of the inaugural Leadership Institute in 2021–2022. I also serve on the Membership Committee and, as of last fall, I’m the ARSL Board Secretary. The connections I’ve made through ARSL have been incredible—I truly feel at home in the library world thanks to this network.

What do you love most about working in a rural or small community?
The relationships. I know our patrons by name, know their families, and often know what they’re going to check out before they say a word. Working here feels like being part of one big extended family. We often have their accounts pulled up before they walk through the door!

Tell us about an exciting or innovative program at your library.
While it may not be cutting-edge, our “Grinchmas” event has become a local favorite. Because the town Santa event limits other Santa-themed appearances, we created our own holiday celebration featuring the Grinch! We offer snacks, photos, and fun activities for all ages. Last year, we collaborated with other groups in town to host Santa, the Grinch, and Buddy the Elf on the same night—Winter Wonderland was a huge hit!
