ARSL Spotlight: Mellissa Clark

Mellissa ClarkDiscover how Georgia library manager Mellissa Clark channels her creativity, empathy, and introverted strength into leading transformative programs for readers of all ages.

Mellissa Clark, Library Manager at Camden County Public Library in St. Marys, Georgia, thrives in the close-knit setting of a rural library. “What I love most is the connections we get to make in the daily lives of our community,” she says. “We bring learning to life in ways that engage and inspire.”

Though naturally introverted, Mellissa challenges herself daily to lead with presence. “I wish I was more extroverted,” she admits. “I teach color guard at the local high school, and even then, I find myself retreating sometimes. But I push myself to be louder and to be heard.”

One of Mellissa’s proudest accomplishments is the Book Buddies program, created during her time as Children’s Specialist. Inspired by struggling young readers, she developed a system where teens mentor younger children, helping them build confidence and literacy skills. Many of those “Lil’ Buddies” have since graduated and now volunteer as Big Buddies, continuing the cycle of support.

Her journey to librarianship wasn’t planned—she initially envisioned a career in teaching, photography, or writing. But after taking a part-time job at her local library to escape a draining management position, she found a new calling. Within six months, she was promoted to full-time; within two years, she was offered a leadership role.

Now, Mellissa finds joy in programming with purpose and creativity. “We’re given a front-row seat to the ups and downs of our community,” she says. “And I constantly ask—how can we help make more of those moments positive?”

Mellissa brings that same thoughtful perspective to ARSL, where she served as Co-Chair of the 2023 Membership Committee and graduated from the ARSL Leadership Institute that same year.
